Amsterdam Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

Data Science is discovering hidden patterns in large amounts of data, using computers, brain power and the wealth of data. Many innovations heavily rely on Data Science: self-driving cars; targeted advertising; sports analytics; recommendation engines.

What will you learn in this minor?

You will learn to carry out a Data Science project from beginning to end. That involves: asking the right (research) question(s), data collection and cleaning, data management and organisation, modelling, communication and visualisation, and implementation of your findings. This minor will give you excellent job prospects. This Minor will give you excellent job opportunities. Searching for “Data Science” on LinkedIn today will give you about 1,000 job hits in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. 

Transition to a Master

The minor will make you conditionally eligible for a UvA Master's programme:


The minor consists of 30 EC and can be completed in one semester. It includes the following courses:

  • Algorithms and Data Structures in Python (6 EC, period 1)*
  • Data Wrangling (6 EC period 1)
  • Databases & Data Visualisation  (6 EC, period 2)
  • Machine Learning  (6 EC, period 2)
  • Privacy Law and Ethics (3 EC, period 3)
  • Text Retrieval and Mining (3 EC, period 3)

Entry requirements

  • You must have successfully completed your first year (60 EC) of a Bachelor’s programme at a research university (WO).
  • Students taking this minor typically follow a strongly quantitative Bachelor's programme in for example  Business, Communication Sciences, Psychology or STEM studies (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • The minor is also open to other students, provided they have an affinity with quantitative methods.
  • This minor is open to students of UvA Economics and Business, except for students of the Bachelor's programme in Actuarial Science, Business Analytics and Econometrics.

Required prior knowledge

The minor Amsterdam Data Science and Artificial Intelligence is for many a difficult programme. You are required to have basic knowledge of Python and Statistics. Self-study before starting the minor will be required in case of deficiencies in:

  • Python
  • Econometrics and Statistics

Application and Admission

Thank you for your interest in our minor programme. Unfortunately, the minor has reached its capacity and the waiting list is also full. For alternative minors, we recommend you to take a look at our website.

This minor has a limited capacity and works on a first come first serve basis. Please note that your can only apply for one minor at the Faculty of Economics and Business. All other applications at our Faculty will not be taken into consideration. .

All students

  • a short motivation to be copied in the application form

Non-UvA students:

  • Latest 11 May: Sign up as an elective student (bijvak student) for Bachelor's in Business Administration in Studielink. Important: make sure that your start date is 1 September 2021.
    You will not be able to sign up for the minor without enrolment.
  • a signed and stamped transcript of grades. We understand that due to the corona crisis it might be difficult to provide us with a certified transcript. Therefore, as an exception, we will also accept non-certified transcripts for the minor applications. We rely on your integrity.
