Microeconomics: Markets and Organisations

This minor explores the behaviour of economies at the level of the consumer, producer and various government bodies. You will acquire deeper insights on how markets and organisations function as well as learn to analyse the role that the government plays in the interaction between businesses and consumers. If you prefer a model-based approach and if you have a strong interest in mathematical analysis, this is the minor for you!

After this minor you are able to understand and evaluate theoretical knowledge and current developments in the product and labour markets. This will give you an advantage when seeking employment in the public sector, in private corporations, NGOs and international organisations.

Programme

This minor consists of 30 EC spread over two semesters.  There are four compulsory courses which cover a wide range of topics in microeconomics (24 EC). This is supplemented with one restricted-choice elective that gives you the possibility to gain more knowledge of a particular subject (6 EC).

You can find the programme and detailed course descriptions of the current academic year in the Course Catalogue.  Please note that the content of the courses may be subject to change. The new course catalogue containing the final programme will be published in the beginning of June.

Entry requirements

  • The minor is open to students who have successfully completed their first-year (60 EC) of a research university (WO) Bachelor's programme.
  • Students from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO) who passed their first-year programme (60 EC) can also be admitted.
  • This minor is open for students of the BSc Business Administration. Instead of the course "Principles of Economics", they have to take an additional restricted-choice elective. This minor is not open for other programmes of Economics and Business.

Application and Admission

Applications start work on a first come first serve basis. Please note that your can only apply for one minor at the Faculty of Economics and Business. All other applications at our Faculty will not be taken into consideration.

All students

  • a short motivation to be copied in the application form

Non-UvA students:

  • Latest 11 May: Sign up as an elective student (bijvak student) for Bachelor's in Economics and Business Economics in Studielink. Important: make sure that your start date is 1 September 2021.
    You will not be able to sign up for the minor without enrolment.
  • a signed and stamped transcript of grades. We understand that due to the corona crisis it might be difficult to provide us with a certified transcript. Therefore, as an exception, we will also accept non-certified transcripts for the minor applications. We rely on your integrity.
