The student rooms are located in over 20 different off-campus buildings spread across the city. These buildings are owned and managed by housing providers who have a partnership with the UvA. Different room types, price ranges and locations are available.
There are three room types available:
Rooms within a room type may be different, but the basics of the rooms remain the same. All of our rooms have basic furnishing.
Room types are linked to four monthly rent budget categories. When filling in the housing application form you need to enter a budget category. Before you choose a budget category, inform yourself about the costs of UvA student housing.
|Room types||Private bedroom||Private facilities||Budget category|
|Private room with shared facilities||Yes||No||1, 2, 3|
|Private room||Yes||Yes||3, 4|
* Some have shared facilities
The UvA does not have a big campus where all the rooms are located, but we have over 20 different off-campus buildings throughout the whole city. The student housing buildings are mostly situated in residential neighborhoods.
The maximum travel time from the housing locations to the UvA’s campuses is for Dutch standards relatively low: about 45 minutes. Most locals travel by bike or public transport. Check the 9292 route planner (for public transport) or Google Maps to find your way in Amsterdam. If you would like to learn more about the different areas check our page on different neighborhoods in Amsterdam.
It is not possible to request a specific location. All students are assigned randomly to rooms within their budget category. Location and budget category are not linked. Student housing in a higher budget category is not more conveniently located than that in a lower budget category.
UvA international student housing has partnerships with multiple housing providers:
The rooms are owned and managed by the housing providers but reserved by the UvA for our international students. UvA housing will forward your information to one of the housing providers, and they will send you the room offer. The UvA also uses the platform ROOM.nl for students to book their rooms.
The housing application has an option to indicate if you are interested in the non-regular housing option: The Student Hotel Amsterdam West.
If you prefer a more campus-style feeling and more service, The Student Hotel (TSH) is a good option. The Student Hotel Amsterdam West offers luxury, fully furnished rooms with a flat-screen TV, a private en-suite bathroom, and a shared kitchen. Facilities include a 24/7 reception, free laundry, gym access, bike rental, and monthly cleaning and housekeeping. The monthly rent is a maximum of €800 a month, depending on the total duration of the contract.
UvA housing can give 90 students a priority booking code for The Student Hotel Amsterdam West. The first 90 students who apply for this option in the housing application form will be guaranteed a room at The Student Hotel Amsterdam West. This will also be the only room offer you will receive. If this option is fully booked, your application will be handled like a regular UvA housing application.
The start date of the TSH contracts will be 1 September 2021, which is about 2 weeks later than the regular UvA housing contracts. The end date of the contracts at Student Hotel Amsterdam West will be either 30 June, 15 July, or 31 August 2022, depending on the room. Therefore, this option is not available for 1-semester exchange students. The rental period cannot be ended early and cannot be extended.
For more information, you can visit the Student Hotel website. Once you are offered a spot in Student Hotel Amsterdam West, you will receive an email from us with a priority booking code. Please do not contact TSH, and do try to book a room before that time.
