Humanities in the city

Humanities scholars feel naturally at home in Amsterdam; a city which is intertwined with the Faculty in many different ways. The Faculty’s buildings are located in the very heart of Amsterdam, ensuring that students and academics form a fixed part of the city’s streetscape and manifest themselves in a multitude of ways.

The Faculty’s academics are partners in diverse public debates and participate in many committees within the cultural sector and local government. During their Bachelor's and Master's, many of the Faculty’s students do internships at businesses and institutions in Amsterdam.

The Faculty’s Illustere School organises various activities for those outside the university with an interest in the humanities. The Faculty is also an important partner of SPUI25, one of Amsterdam's most respected academic and cultural institutions. The Humanities Lab AVS offers support for students, PhD candidates, alumni and staff who are starting or growing their own company or organisation. VOX-POP is the creative space of the Faculty.
